From Exhibit Banners to Tote Bags: The Story of Peabody Essex Museum’s Sustainable Transformation

Ecologic Designs, a sustainable design company based in Colorado, specializes in upcycling and repurposing materials to create unique and eco-friendly products. One of their latest projects was working with the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts to upcycle their old event banners into stylish tote bags.

The process started with the museum sending their retired banners to Ecologic Designs. Instead of discarding these banners, which would have ended up in a landfill, they were transformed into something new and useful.

Ecologic Designs carefully deconstructed the banners, separating the fabric from the hardware, and then cleaned and prepped the material for sewing. From there, they cut the banners into the desired tote bag size and sewed them together, adding straps and zippers to complete the final product.

The result was a collection of unique tote bags, each with its own design and history, showcasing the Peabody Essex Museum’s commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

These bags are not only fashionable and functional, but they also serve as a reminder of the importance of repurposing and upcycling materials to reduce waste and protect the environment.

The Peabody Essex Museum, located in Salem, Massachusetts, is one of the oldest continuously operating museums in the United States. It was founded in 1799 as the East India Marine Society, and its collection has since grown to encompass over two million works of art and culture from around the world. The museum is particularly known for its collection of Asian art, as well as its maritime art and history exhibits.

In recent years, the Peabody Essex Museum has been making efforts to become more sustainable and environmentally conscious. One way they are doing this is by partnering with companies like Ecologic Designs, who specialize in creating upcycled products from materials like recycled banners.

By repurposing their old event banners, the Peabody Essex Museum is able to reduce waste and create unique, one-of-a-kind products that are both eco-friendly and stylish. From tote bags to backpacks, these products are not only functional, but they also serve as a conversation piece about sustainability and the importance of reducing our impact on the planet.
